Student Success Stories

“One of the most notable success stories from the 21st Century Program at Gibson Elementary is that of Idrees, a third-grade student who faced challenges in his acclimation to US culture and standardized testing. Despite being in 3rd grade, Idrees enrolled in fifth-grade reading classes with Miss Brandon and fourth-grade math classes with Ms. Lea, both of whom were committed to providing him with the support he needed to succeed. Through hard work, dedication, and personalized tutoring, Idrees began to show significant improvement. His understanding of complex reading concepts expanded, and his confidence in tackling math problems grew. With the focused instruction from Miss Brandon and Ms. Lea, Idrees not only caught up with his grade-level peers but also made enough progress to pass his first SOL (Standards of Learning) test in the state, an incredible accomplishment that marked a major milestone in his academic journey. Idrees' success is a testament to the power of individualized tutoring, and his story highlights how the 21st Century Program provides students with the resources, mentorship, and encouragement they need to reach their full potential. His achievement in passing the SOL proves that with the right support, every student has the ability to overcome obstacles and thrive academically.”

“Miracle was retained in kindergarten. After evaluating the situation and determining her learning style, Miracle grabbed on to her self-esteem which inspires us by her courage and perseverance. This is a reminder that obstacles can be overcome when you have just one person cheering you on to the finish line. Miracle received awards in reading, math, and citizenship at the end of the school year after attending the tutorial program at High Street Baptist Church in Milton, North Carolina. Miracle was so excited and continues to strive for the mark of excellence.” “NP did not pass her SOL the first time. We collaborated with her one on one at the High Street Baptist Church tutorial site in Milton, North Carolina and she successfully accomplished the score she needed and scored above the required score on her retake. Minimal anxiety can become frustrated when taking test for some students. Math can often present challenges for students when it comes to understanding the material. Those who struggle may be taking longer than others on work are not able to solve assignments on their own or are unable to complete tests. NP is gaining confidence in herself and has learned to pace herself accordingly.”

“All students in grades 4-8 passed their SOL. One student received a pass advance score in reading and writing.”

“Our kindergarten student learned to read this year and enjoyed reading with tutors and peers. First semester, the students really enjoyed reading books, giving book reports, and asking each other questions, (checking for listening comprehension). Nine of he students consistently made progress in their classwork, behavior, and attendance. Parent conferences were held when students were not progressing. The coordinator had student conferences at the end of each grading period and stayed in communication with the assistant principal at Westwood Middle School. Some of the students had challenges but passed their SOL and grade.”
